Happenings in South Burlington for March 19-25, 2017

South Burlington provides so many opportunities for families to go out and enjoy their community. Often there are free things to do as well as things that don't cost too much money. Here are some ideas for the week of March 19-25, 2017. Get out and have some fun!

GROWING KIDS SOUTH BURLINGTON BIRTHDAY BOOK PROGRAM
Sign up to receive FREE books!
What: A free, age-appropriate book for your child on each of their birthdays from ages 1-5
Who: All families with children ages 0-5 that live in South Burlington
How: 1. You can sign up right here on this blog by filling out the form under the tab above.
          2. You can go to the South Burlington Library and fill out a card there.
          3. You can email growingkids@childcareresource.org with your name, address, each     child's birth date.

Go to the South Burlington Library during your child's birthday month, pick up your free book, and sign in so we know you've received it.  You also have the option of having the book mailed to your home.
Public Skating at Cairns Arena
Where: Cairns Arena, 600 Swift Street
When:  Sunday:  1:00-2:30 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 10:00 am-12:30 pm,
Who: Everyone
Cost: Adults:  $5.00, Children 6-17:  $3.00, Children under 5:  $2.00

Skaters of all ages lace up and hit the ice. Skates available for rent for $3.00.



South Burlington Playgroup
Where:  Ascension Church, 95 Allen Road
When:  Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30-11:00 am, and Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30 pm
Who:  Ages 0-5
Cost:  Free
Come play and meet friends at the South Burlington Playgroup, a free caregiver/child playgroups sponsored by the South Burlington Family Center. Playgroups are a wonderful way to connect with other parents and caregivers. Children have the opportunity to interact with peers and adults in a safe and supportive environment. 





Wildflowers Open Studio
Where: 1 Executive Dr Suite 103
When:  Monday: 10:00am-12:00pm; Tuesday: 10:00am-12:00pm, and 3:30-5:30 pm;  Wednesday: 11:00am-1:00pm and 3:30-5:30 pm; Thursday: 10:00am-12:00pm, 3:30pm-5:30pm; Friday: 10:00am-12:00pm
Who:  Ages 0-6
Cost:  15 dollars for one child, 5 dollars for each additional child.  Parent/guardian must be present
Time for children to independently explore the four fixed learning areas; tinkering, open ended art, sensory play, and paint exploration. Activities and materials that are appropriate for all ages and abilities. However, parents and caregivers of toddlers should be advised that small loose parts may be present. A time for caregivers to act as engaged observers of their children's learning process, guiding exploration as their children interact with peers and with materials. A place where children can relish in limitless creativity without concern for MESS! Thus, Children should always arrive in "studio clothes."





Hike it Baby at Wheeler Nature Area
Where:  Wheeler Nature Area, 730 Swift Street
When:  Monday, March 20 from 9:00-11:00 am
Who:  Ages 0 and up
Cost:  Free
Hike Wheeler at a caregiver pace and explore!  Meet by the trail head at the parking lot.






Tiny Tot Time at South Burlington Community Library
Where:  South Burlington Community Library, 540 Dorset Street
When:  Tuesday, March 21 at 9:15 and 10:30 am (2 sessions)
Who:  Ages 0-3
Cost:  Free
Join Mr. Monkey and Miss Meg for songs and stories during this literacy based playgroup for young patrons. The morning will begin with a short book and group activity followed by time to play with friends and explore a variety of developmentally appropriate materials for young children including board books, blocks, puzzles and puppets.










 
 
Baby Time at South Burlington Community Library
Where:  South Burlington Community Library, 540 Dorset Street
When:  Wednesday, March 22 at 10:30 am
Who:  Ages 0-2
Cost:  Free
Join Miss Meg for this story time for infants.
The activities have been chosen for non-walking infants.




Rockin' Ron the Friendly Pirate at University Mall
Where:  University Mall, 155 Dorset Street
When:  Wednesday, March 22 at 10:30 am
Who:  Ages 2-6
Cost:  Free
Rockin' Ron the Friendly Pirate will perform Pirate Music for Kids and Kids at Heart, every Wednesday at 10:30 am.



Storytime at Barnes and Noble
Where: Barnes and Noble, 102 Dorset Street
When: Wednesday, March 22 at 11:00 am
Who: All Ages
Cost: Free
Come to this storytime, upstairs in the Children's Department!

Mindfulness and Yoga at Kid Logic Learning
Where:  Kid Logic Learning, 72 Ethan Allen Drive Ste 2
When:  Wednesday, March 22 from 6:00-7:30 pm
Who:  Parents of young children
Cost:  Free, Please pre-register by calling 863-3367 ext. 131 or email: aide@childcareresource.org
Join Ellen Drolette, early educator as she shows some tried and true techniques that will help teach your young child develop body awareness, how to manage stress through meditation, breathing and awareness.
Parents will go over the methods, the research, and the resources with Ellen while the children have child care close by with some amazing high school students.
Children will join the larger group to go through a series of breathing/ calming yoga flow with you beside them and Ellen leading at the end of the session. Children’s bellies will be full and will be filling Zen and ready for bedtime following. Dinner will be included. Participants who pre-register will receive a gift.


 
South Burlington Playgroup Partners with Hike It Baby
Where:  The Whales Tales in South Burlington: 30 Community Drive
When:  Thursday, March 23 from 9:15 am-11:15 am
Who:  Parents with young children
Cost:  Free

Hike It Baby South Burlington and the South Burlington Family Center are teaming up to get families out in the fresh air! 
Park in the Planet Fitness parking lot spaces closest to the road. Meet across the road to a short loop (~1mile). This hike will be at a toddler pace. 
Helpful things to bring: Snack and water. Children's change of clothes for the ride home. This whole route is flat and can accommodate strollers. Need to arrive after 9:20? Latecomers are welcomed and can be easily seen from the hiking path. This event happens rain, snow or shine!

Storytime Adventures at South Burlington Community Library
Where:  South Burlington Community Library, 540 Dorset Street
When:  Friday, March 24 at 9:30 am
Who:  Ages 3 to 5
Cost:  Free
Join Mr. Monkey and Miss Meg for an adventure in a book. During this program we will read stories, sing songs, play games and create with a variety of materials that our friendly puppet has hiding in his tree house. The stories and activities have been chosen for children over the age of 3. 



  


Friday Night Pajama Storytime
Where: Barnes and Noble, 102 Dorset Street
When: Friday, March 24 at 7:00 pm
Who: All Ages
Cost: Free
Come wearing pajamas to this story time upstairs in the Children's Department!





Saturday Morning Family Playtime at Ascension Church
Where:  Ascension Church, 95 Allen Road
When:  Saturday, March 25 from 9:30-11:00 am
Who:  Ages 0-6
Cost:  Free
Come to Ascension Church in South Burlington on Saturday mornings this winter for some indoor and outdoor play!  They will have a variety of gross motor activities so your little one can burn some energy.  They will also have arts and crafts.  This playgroup is brought to you by the South Burlington Family Center in partnership with Growing Kids South Burlington.  Older siblings are welcome.
